An Equated Monthly Instalment is the fixed amount you pay the lender each month — part interest, part principal — until the loan is fully repaid.
At the start most of your EMI covers interest. As the balance falls, more of each instalment chips away at the principal — visible in the amortization schedule.
A longer tenure lowers the monthly EMI but raises the total interest you pay. Shorten the tenure or prepay to save on interest.
